Peterborough Examiner Available Online

Through our Knowledge Ontario agreement that provides province wide access to e-resources for public, school and academic libraries users can now search the Peterborough Examiner, as well as other Ontario and Quebec newspapers, online via the Eureka site. Click here for access.

Greater Access to E-books

The Library is pleased to announce that we have improved access to over 30 000 e-book titles via TOPCAT that were acquired through the federal Canadian Research Knowledge Network (CRKN). These e-books from Oxford, Cambridge, and Taylor & Francis/Routledge cover a range of scholarly subjects. Under our CRKN license, forthcoming titles will be added as they become available.


NFB Films In the Classroom

The National Film Board’s (NFB)  online Screening Room website currently features over 800 films, clips and trailers from the NFB collection. The site offers Described Video and Closed Captioning capabilities.

Trent has subscribed to Public Performance Rights (PPR) for educational use. This means they can now be viewed for classroom use as long as no entry fee is charged. More information about NFB films and educational resources is available at http://www.nfb.ca/education/en/.

The Trent Library has recently assumed control over audiovisual resources to form the Media Collection. Further information about the Media Collection is available at http://www.trentu.ca/admin/library/media/index.html .

Knowledge Ontario announces new databases for 2009/10

Minister of Culture Aileen Carroll announced the 2009-2010 databases on January 29 at the Ontario Library Association Super Conference. Five million dollars were spent improving  Resource Ontario and 6 new databases were added.  Access to French language documents was improved. The main beneficiaries continue to be Ontario’s high school population with very few academic level offerings available.  One notable database that has been removed is the Canadian Reference Centre– all links to this database have been removed from the Trent Library website.

Trial: Euromonitor’s Global Market Information Database

Euromonitor is a primary research firm that publishes business reference information and strategic market reports.  They specialize in country and consumer research.  They cover many markets, including OTC healthcare, cosmetics and toiletries, packaged food, alcoholic beverages, soft drinks and consumer electronics. 
Through the Ontario Consortium of University Libraries (OCUL) Trent users have trial access to Global Market Information Database Plus until February 13thClick here to access the trial. Please send us your comments (form) and include the name “GMID”.

The database contains three sections – Statistics, Market Analysis (reports) and Comments. 
The first section contains statistical data. It contains over one million demographic, economic and marketing statistics for 205 countries.   Some examples include annual rates of inflation, foreign direct investment, GDP and population.  The data sets can reach back as far as 1977 and can be projected through 2020.  There is also an extensive amount of coverage looking at market size data.  This information tracks the sales of fast moving consumer goods across 80 core countries.  The core countries comprise 75% of the world’s population and 90% of the world’s GDP.  Consumer market size data is broken into retail value and retail volume terms.  The time frame typically covers 10 years including forecast data.   

The second section is called market analysis.  It contains over 15,000 full text market reports.  The reports offer strategic analysis on consumer, industrial and service sectors.  The reports are broken down by global reports, country reports, company reports, etc.  You can easily access reports using the Browse Analysis feature. 

The final section is comments/articles.  The articles provide in-depth analysis of the political, economic, consumer and industry trends that affect countries and regions worldwide.

New: Proquest Dissertations and Theses

PQDT — Full Text includes 2.4 million dissertation and theses citations from around the world from 1861 to the present day together with 1 million full text dissertations that are available for download in PDF format. The database offers full text for most of the dissertations added since 1997 and strong retrospective full text coverage for older graduate works.

AMED is an Allied and Complementary Medicine database produced by the Health Care Information Service of the British Library. It covers a selection of journals in complementary medicine, palliative care, and several professions allied to medicine. The scope is primarily European. The trial will end December 6th, 2008. Natural Standard is “a clinical decision support tool that is designed to help clinicians and consumers on the safety and efficacy of herbs, supplements, vitamins, diets, nutrition, exercise, and complementary practices (yoga, chiropractic ).” It is an international, multidiscplinary, evidence-based information source for complementary and alternative therapies. This resource includes a database of herbs/supplements, health/wellness, allergy/immunology, brand names, and interactions. The trial will end November 28th, 2008.
