Remembrance Day Observance

Trent University will observe Remembrance Day with a special Service of Remembrance on Wednesday, 11 November 2009 at 10:45am in the Great Hall of Champlain College. The Reverend Glenn Empey, Spiritual Affairs Coordinator, will officiate with the participation of various members of the Trent community. All are welcomed to attend and to take a few moments to remember.

For those who are unable to attend, Spiritual Affairs invites you to observe a moment of silence at 11:00am The Library will be observing 2 minutes of silence at 11am We ask those in the Library at that time to be respectful of those wishing to participate.

Peterborough Examiner Available Online

Through our Knowledge Ontario agreement that provides province wide access to e-resources for public, school and academic libraries users can now search the Peterborough Examiner, as well as other Ontario and Quebec newspapers, online via the Eureka site. Click here for access.

We are in the process of adding links to the site via our Directory of Online Databases page and subject guides.

Card Office September Hours

The ID Card Office has been moved for the month of September to better facilitate giving out cards to new students. Until September 28th it is in Blackburn Hall, Room 134. The hours are:

• Monday, September 7 (Labour Day), 10:30 am to 5:00 pm
• Tuesday, September 8, 9:00 am to 7:00 pm
• Wednesday, September 9 to Friday, September 11, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm
• Sunday, September 13, 12 noon to 5:00 pm
• Monday to Friday, September 14-18, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm (Tuesday until 7:00 pm)
• Monday to Friday, September 21-25, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm (Tuesday until 7:00 pm)

Changing Roles for Librarians

As part of library re-organization Information Services Librarians are becoming Learning and Liaison Librarians. They are still the primary contacts for providing library instruction and research assistance to students. The goal of the re-organization is to increase their liaison functions. This potentially means greater involvement with faculty in collection development decisions, faculty research and creating greater ties between the library and departments.

New Study Carrels Space

The Library has converted sixteen study carrels on the fourth floor into first-come first-use study spaces. The locks have been removed and flip cards added to indicate if a carrel is available or in-use. The study carrels on the third floor are still for graduate student use only and will be assigned to students in the fall.

Greater Access to E-books

The Library is pleased to announce that we have improved access to over 30 000 e-book titles via TOPCAT that were acquired through the federal Canadian Research Knowledge Network (CRKN). These e-books from Oxford, Cambridge, and Taylor & Francis/Routledge cover a range of scholarly subjects. Under our CRKN license, forthcoming titles will be added as they become available.

NFB Films In the Classroom

The National Film Board’s (NFB)  online Screening Room website currently features over 800 films, clips and trailers from the NFB collection. The site offers Described Video and Closed Captioning capabilities.

Trent has subscribed to Public Performance Rights (PPR) for educational use. This means they can now be viewed for classroom use as long as no entry fee is charged. More information about NFB films and educational resources is available at http://www.nfb.ca/education/en/.

The Trent Library has recently assumed control over audiovisual resources to form the Media Collection. Further information about the Media Collection is available at http://www.trentu.ca/admin/library/media/index.html .

Summer Electricity Savings Initiative

In an effort to contribute to Trent’s sustainability program, the Bata Library and Information Technology have partnered to introduce a Summer Time Power Down initiative in the Bata Library.

To minimize electricity usage, 42 desktop computers and monitors in various areas of the Library building are being turned off for the duration of the summer until September 2009. Full network access is still available, just on fewer desktop machines. Air Trent is also available as usual for laptop users. 

It is estimated by the I.T. department that the power reduction will amount to approximately 8 KW hours per day.

The Library has posted signage explaining the purpose of the initiative, and where alternative computers are available.

We are pleased to support the ongoing measures being taken by the Sustainability Office in the Physical Resources Department and many others throughout the Trent community to maintain a more Sustainable Trent.
